2018: Surgimate’s Year in Review

2018 – what a year it has been! We launched our new web-based platform, Surgimate Practice™ – empowering practices with improved functionality, interoperability and anywhere, anytime access. This is a significant leap forward and positions us as the leader in the industry, continuing to innovate and address industry needs.


Surgimate successfully signed-on another 267 surgeons, in 14 different states across the country. We also exhibited at multiple conferences across the country. Here are some of the biggest surgical practices who joined us this year:

The year in review:


We started 2018 by signing Austin Retina Associates, an eight surgeon group in Texas. The practice had dozens of forms that needed to be manually completed for any given surgery, and will use Surgimate to automate all these forms and their entire surgery scheduling process.


We then exhibited at DocSF (Digital Orthopedic Conference San Francisco) in January. DocSF is a new conference that aims to bridge the worlds of digital health and clinical orthopaedics. Graham Hesselberg, our Chief Solutions Consultant, was a panelist on the DocSF18 Innovation Awards.

January also brought in San Mateo Podiatry Group – our first Podiatry practice – located in San Mateo, CA. The three surgeon group use DrChrono for their EHR and will use Surgimate for tracking all pre-surgery items and to communicate between departments.


Surgimate also used the opportunity to partner with DrChrono and build an API for ease of integration for the San Mateo Group and other DrChrono clients.


The end of January brought in Orthopedic Associates (OA), a 7 surgeon physician-owned practice based in Denver, Colorado. OA were having trouble reporting on canceled surgeries, available block time and other critical data to help the practice run more efficiently. They selected Surgimate to be their one centralized location to manage every aspect of their surgery scheduling.


We kicked off February with ORA Orthopedics, a 25 surgeon practice, joining the growing base of orthopaedic practices. ORA were looking for a surgical scheduling platform to be implemented across their seven locations in Iowa and Illinois. Surgimate will streamline their processes for surgical scheduling and provide data for business insights into their operations.


In March we welcomed London Women’s Care (LWC), a 10 surgeon multi-specialty practice offering services in OB/GYN, Internal Medicine, Family Practice, Pediatrics and Behavioral Health. Located in Laurel County, Kentucky (our first client in Kentucky!), LWC chose Surgimate to provide them with one shared digital surgical calendar, that can be accessed by any staff member at any location. They found Surgimate’s HIPAA compliant surgical calendar fit their needs best, and will enable them to improve efficiency and transparency.


The spring kicked off with a bang, with the MSK Group joining in April. MSK is a 36 surgeon orthopaedic practice serving greater Tennessee. Surgimate will standardize the workflow across all locations and automate their charge capture process, including pushing data back into their EHR/PM system, athenahealth.


April also brought Spring conferences including the AAOE & ASCA conferences. AAOE is a wonderful opportunity to meet with our existing orthopedic clients and establish new relationships. During the conference, Justin Rockman, our VP of Sales & Business Development, gave a presentation on “A Glimpse into the future: AI and surgery scheduling” and spoke about how technology is going to change the way practices coordinate surgeries.

At AAOE, we also officially launched our new cloud application, Surgimate Practice – creating lots of buzz among existing and new clients alike. Our new application offers even more than our renowned client-server product, plus the ability to tap into APIs. Surgimate Practice™  can be accessed anytime, anywhere – on any device. All that’s needed is a web browser and an internet connection.

We continued conference season In May, when we exhibited at the California Orthopedic Association (COA) annual conference. We also secured a partnership with Allscripts, building an API for ease of integration with their PM/EHR.


Atlantis Orthopaedics in Florida signed with Surgimate in June, along with MSJR of Queens (NY), and Athens Urology  – a four surgeon Urology practice in Georgia who will use Surgimate’s API with Greenway PrimeSuite to interface with their PM/EHR system. Surgimate will provide them with a holistic view of their entire practice and enable them to better manage their workload.


Surgimate closed Q2 by bringing on Central Carolina Surgery (CCS), a 22 surgeon multi-specialty practice in Greensboro, NC. CCS offers services for breast cancer and benign breast disease, hernias, thyroid gland, colon surgery, trauma services, and bariatric (weight loss) surgery. CCS will use Surgimate to streamline operations and manage the different steps for each type of surgery in the practice. Surgimate will also provide management with better data to help make informed business decisions.


In July, Surgimate officially partnered with athenahealth®’s ‘More Disruption Please’ program and became part of the athenahealth® Marketplace. “We are proud to be partnering with athenahealth to provide our mutual clients with a seamless integration at a flip of the switch,” said Rebecca Brygel, CEO of Surgimate.

August brought in Las Cruces Orthopaedic Associates, a four surgeon group in New Mexico who will use Surgimate for tracking and improved communication.


Surgimate then closed Q3 by bringing in Chesapeake Urology, the largest urology practice in Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic region. The 96 surgeon practice selected Surgimate to manage all aspects of their surgery scheduling, and standardize their surgical workflow across all locations. Surgimate will integrate with their PM/EHR, Allscripts, using an API for a smooth transfer of information. Surgimate will provide Chesapeake Urology with a centralized location for all surgery related data, and unified workflow across all locations –  enabling them to scale-up efficiently and ensure the highest level of patient care.

In September, Surgimate announced a partnership with Greenway, joining their marketplace and building an API for ease of integration with their PM/EHR, PrimeSuite.



October brought us Tidewater Orthopedics, a 9 surgeon orthopaedic practice in Hampton, Virginia – just down the road from another client of ours, Hampton Roads Orthopaedics Spine & Sports Medicine. Tidewater was using a patchwork of systems to manage their surgical scheduling needs and they sought out an all-in-one platform to manage their workflow.


Onto the home stretch… we closed the year with Watauga Orthopaedics (WO), a 22 surgeon practice in Johnson City, TN. WO use athenahealth for their PM/EHR and will use Surgimate’s API for seamless integration. WO will also use Surgimate’s API with Outlook to sync all data from their surgical calendar, and ensure staff can access information anytime, anywhere – including surgeons on their smartphones.


And that’s a wrap. What a fantastic and productive year this was for Surgimate. We would like to thank all of our new and existing clients for their support in 2018, and we look forward to seeing what’s in store for 2019.
